About the hot towel shave

What is a hot towel shave?

A barbershop wet shave performed with a straight razor and warm towels. Steaming towels soften the beard and open the pores. Pre-shave oil and shaving cream are layered. The razor passes with the grain first, then carefully against. A cold towel and balm finish closes the pores. It's a 40-minute ritual, not a 5-minute trim.

Is a hot towel shave good for your skin?

Yes, when done by a trained barber. The hot towels exfoliate dead skin and lift ingrown hairs. The straight razor — sharper than any cartridge — cuts the hair flat without dragging, which reduces irritation and razor bumps for most men. A cold-towel close and balm calm the skin afterwards.

Hot towel shave vs cartridge shave at home

A cartridge razor on dry or lazy-foam stubble drags hair before cutting it — that's where bumps come from. A barber's straight razor with hot towels and proper lather cuts hair flat on the first pass. The result is a closer shave that lasts longer and irritates less. The trade-off is time: 40 minutes once a week or fortnight, not 3 minutes every morning.

Frequently asked.

How much does a hot towel shave cost in Melbourne?

Across Melbourne hot towel shaves range $40–$120 depending on the shop and what's included. At Sina Blendz our hot towel shave is from $60 at both Southbank locations and takes about 40 minutes.

Are hot towel shaves worth it?

If you've never had one, yes — at least try it once. The closer shave, the reduced irritation, and the ritual itself are why men have booked them weekly for a hundred years. After your first one you'll know if it earns a place in your rhythm.

Is a hot towel shave good for sensitive skin?

Often it's better than home shaving for sensitive skin. The hot towels and oil soften the beard so the razor pulls less, the straight razor cuts cleaner, and the cold close calms the skin. Tell us in the chair if you have sensitivity or razor bumps so we can adjust the pressure and the products.

How often should you get a hot towel shave?

Anywhere from weekly to monthly. For day-to-day shaving most men still use their own razor; the hot towel shave is the reset — once a week, once a fortnight, or before a big occasion.

Can you do a hot towel shave on a beard or moustache?

Yes. Tell us the shape you want — full beard, goatee, stubble, neckline-only — and we'll work the lather and the razor around what you're keeping.
